Adverse Reactions include but not limited to the following cause you wanted more specific stuff and this is the closest I found:
Nervous System: dizziness, drowsiness, dyskinesia, headache, rare reports of Tourette’s syndrome, toxic psychosis, seizures
Psychiatric: transient depressed mood, aggressive behavior
it is one of the safer drugs out there, I am sure your doctor weighed the risks.
Good luck

I want to scream every time I hear where some doctor put another kid diagnosed with ADD on Ritalin. Ouch !!!
Loose the sugar in your diet. Eat more healthy foods and you might loose the so called ADD.
This answer is short but I’m trying to make you think ans go do the research and find some real answers, OK ??
It sounds like you know most of it already, but to answer your question:
“What are its short-term effects?
Ritalin (methylphenidate) is a central nervous system stimulant, similar to amphetamines in the nature and duration of its effects. It is believed that it works by activating the brain stem arousal system and cortex. Pharmacologically, it works on the neurotransmitter dopamine, and in that respect resembles the stimulant characteristics of cocaine. Short-term effects can include nervousness and insomnia, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, palpitations, headaches, changes in heart rate and blood pressure (usually elevation of both, but occasionally depression), skin rashes and itching, abdominal pain, weight loss, and digestive problems, toxic psychosis, psychotic episodes, drug dependence syndrome, and severe depression upon withdrawal.
What are its long-term effects?
High doses of stimulants produce a predictable set of symptoms that include loss of appetite (may cause serious malnutrition), tremors and muscle twitching, fevers, convulsions, and headaches (may be severe), irregular heartbeat and respirations (may be profound and life threatening), anxiety, restlessness, paranoia, hallucinations, and delusions, excessive repetition of movements and meaningless tasks, and formicaton (sensation of bugs or worms crawling under the skin).”
….So, yes, it can cause hallucinations.
As a side note, there has been research that shows that Fish Oil helps with brain health issues like ADD. Good luck!
Medications in this world may affect each person a little differently than the other. As a parent with 2 children on this and a very similar medication for several years, the only real side effect that they have had is a suppresion of their appetites (which they more than made up for when the medication wore off each day.) .The dosage that the doctor gave you should be rather small to start with and will adjust it according to how you feel after taking it. Be very open with your doctor about your fears. He will help you.
ADHD is diagnosed by health professionals who form their opinion by observing a child’s behavior. There are no brain scans, blood tests, or anything else definite that is used during diagnosis. The problem with this is there are many other problems that have the same symptoms of ADHD. Many parents, because of not knowing, settle for ADHD as a diagnosis before looking at everything. For example, any problem dealing with the fuels of the body: water, food, blood and air can cause behavior problems. Water, food, blood and air to the body are just like gas and oil to a car. If you put bad gas or have old or the wrong oil in your car, it will act up just like a child acts up when eating foods they are allergic to, drinking or breathing contaminated water or air or having blood disorders.
There are also many medical, biological, emotional and mental conditions that mimic ADHD also. For those who are searching for reasons behind their child’s behavior, here are some possibilities. Only settle for the diagnosis of ADHD after checking out all of these problems and many more.
If you need the Ritalin, it should not have those types of reactions. I started taking it (as a middle-age adult) and it actually calms me down because I NEED it. One way to tell — does drinking coffee make you jittery or does it just make your brain work better? That’s how Ritalin is. I did, however experience a feeling like someone was trying to put cotton balls in my ears–I think I just got used to it after awhile, but no hallucinogenic episodes or anything close to it.
don’t take it. by the way, next time you have a question like this, you can use a search engine to find the answer. enter “Ritalin” (or whatever) and “side-effects” and then read whatever websites come up on the search engine.
