What are my chances of contracting herpes if my gf is using valtrex with and without a condom?

Question by Luke: What are my chances of contracting herpes if my gf is using valtrex with and without a condom?
My gf is positive for herpes. She has had it for a couple of years and has only had one out break. I would like a specific percentage of my chances of contracting it while she is on valtrex both with using a condom as well as not using a condom. Much appreciated! :)

Not a good idea to have sex with somebody who u know to be taking Valtrex for herpes. All of the professional advice says to have sex using a condom and never without. There are not specific percentages available.

Two types of herpes simplex virus infections can cause genital herpes:

HSV type 1 (HSV-1). This is the type that usually causes cold sores or fever blisters around your mouth, though it can be spread to your genital area during oral sex.

HSV type 2 (HSV-2). This is the type that commonly causes genital herpes. The virus spreads through sexual contact and skin-to-skin contact. HSV-2 is very common and highly contagious whether or not you have an open sore. However, in many people the infection causes no recognized signs or symptoms and can still be spread to a sexual partner.

Because the virus dies quickly outside of the body, it’s nearly impossible to get the infection through contact with toilets, towels or other objects used by an infected person.

Valtrex is antiviral medication that can helps reduce the possibility of herpes being passed even in between out breaks. If she is taking it regularly she should have less chance of passing it to you. Valtrex can reduce shedding up to 90 percent and reduce transmission up to 50 percent. Herpes can still be passed even if condoms are used but if you use them in between out breaks and she is on Valtrex than that should reduce your risk even further. Herpes is not always automatically passed on when you have sex with some one that has it and if you take all of the proper precautions to help prevent getting it then you can escape getting it.

Valacyclovir (generic name) Valtrex (brand name) is used to treat herpes zoster (shingles) and genital herpes. It does not cure herpes infections but decreases pain and itching, helps sores to heal, and prevents new ones from forming.
You will get herpes simplex infection with or without using condom. Transmission risk from infected female to male is approximately 4-5% annually. Condoms offer moderate protection against HSV-2 in both men and women, with consistent condom users having a 30% lower risk of HSV-2 acquisition compared with those who never use condoms. The virus cannot pass through a latex condom, but a condom’s effectiveness is limited because it does not prevent skin contact or bodily fluid contact with the scrotum, anus, buttocks, upper thighs or area immediately surrounding the penis, all of which are susceptible to infection with and transmission of the virus.

I think researchers discovered that herpes sheds the virus even when there is no outbreak. You should look into this with your doctor.
